Born in Rajasthan, Amit Goyal is an international leader in basic and applied advanced materials research and currently runs the RENEW institute at the University of Buffalo, a center dedicated to research and education on the globe’s problems with water, energy and the environment.
Goyal has an extensive education that all began at the Mayo School in Rajasthan. After graduating he attended the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur where he earned a bachelor of technology in metallurgical engineering in 1986. He then completed his master’s of science in mechanical and aerospace engineering and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering both at the University of Rochester. He also has an executive MBA from Purdue University, an international executive MBA from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, and executive business training from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management.
His vast professional achievements are a testament to his lengthy education. After earning his Ph.D., Goyal accepted a position at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. His research there has had a large impact as a pioneer in the materials science field involving high temperature superconductors. In 2008 the lab made him a chair of the Corporate Fellows Council, and in 2015 following the news of his future move to Buffalo they made him an Emeritus Corporate Fellow.
Goyal has a long list of accomplishments including: over 350 publications that he has authored or co-authored, 15 plenary talks, over 160 invited presentations and more than 80 patents. He is also a fellow of eight societies: the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, the World Innovation Foundation, the American Society of Medals, the Institute of Physics, and the American Ceramic Society and the World Technology Network. His awards list is even longer including: the E.O. Lawrence Award in the inaugural category of “Energy Science & Innovation,” R&D Magazine’s “Innovator of the Year” award, the World Technology Award in the area of “Materials,” the Energy-100 award of the U.S. Department of Energy, the Pride of India Gold Award, the Global Indus Technovator Award, the Lockheed-Martin NOVA Award and the inaugural TR-100/TR-35 Award from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s TR-Review Magazine. He twice was named Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Inventor of the Year. Amit Goyal has been an essential contributor to the field, and will continue to make large strides at the RENEW Institute.
